Jumbie

Who in the Caribbean does not have the knowledge of what a Jumbie is?
Every one of the English speaking Caribbean countries has their shares of superstition (with variations) around the tale of the jumbie.

Jumbie------>Zumbie(African-American pronounication)------>Zombie(hollywood's spelling)

What the difference between a jumbie and a duppy?

None. Jamaicans say doppy. But they're the same thing...I think...

I've heard about the term Jumbie before in my country but seems like they just call people Jumbie without even knowing what it means.

It's actually "DJOEKA" and is nothing else then a bush negro in Surinam. The ones that really live in the bushes you know, and therefore aren't that familiar with modern technology. They really make like idiots when they see something unusual to them :S

for example:
You walk with a group and someone sees a nice car. He would go like: "look at that car! It's so awesome!!"
Then someone else can say: "don't act like a djoeka!!"
(I hope you kind of get the picture here??)

Oh yeah, they're talks about them in Guyana, there's some myth about them having mysterious powers also. Tell me, do you know what a baccoo is?

There is a myth in Surinam about the Bakroe:
Some kind of short guy with a really big head, half of his body is from flesh, the other half of wood. They usually do people harm. They makes owl-like sounds at night

There are also people around that actually have them as pets and send them out to do others harm of any kind.
I also heard that they are being sold (in secret) on the local markets.

Yep same thing dude. I see Guyana has at least some thing in common with the rest of South America. Its pretty much the exact same myth.

I think we all have the jumbie. when i was a kid, i saw the jankuno shows with tall men on stilts, which is supposed to a jumbie, depicted. Walks just like a damn zombie too lol. In Jamaica we have tons of duppies. Rollin' Calf(my fave) when you really drunk off of 'jankrow batty'(unprocessed sugar cane rum Guyanese call it "bush rum" from what i was told) you start to hallucinate. Your mind haunts you of your primitive past in the night and the son of Gashanami called Rollin' Calf, comes for you to take his father revenge on all human life. Just like the Bantu bull god of vengeance, all of his legion of 500,000 calves all are black in coat with eye of fire and long black horns to kill anyone in their path. In Jamaica, powerful shaman that invoke demons and duppies from hell learned from their fathers that used to live in Africa. Jamaican Obeah don't have just African roots. It is also mixed with Indian magick as well. To this day, the strongest black mages are of Indian descent. The combination of the two magickal styles made Obeah what it is today. Thus proving our distant brotherhood.
